🌱Pill / body / hormones chat 💗7 months ago I made the decision to stop taking the hormonal contraceptive pill & start taking control of my own body. I want to understand my natural body, my moods & try to find a deeper understanding & connection to my natural body. I realised that by being on synthetic hormones I am masking what my body is trying to tell me & I am not having the benefits our natural hormones can provide. Being a women is incredible & natural hormones that release from us at different times during our cycle can be pretty special. I want to understand my periods, cycles, energy & the benefits that they bring to our daily life. NATURAL Periods are a great indicator to let us know what is happening on the inside & so when I was on the pill I didn’t have a connection as to what was happening on the inside as the periods on the pill are essentially ‘fake’ as they are not your natural hormones. This is completely my own personal experience & everyone has a different body therefore will experience different things & I’m just sharing my own experience so please keep that in mind. ( I completely understand why some people choose to be on hormonal contraception for various reasons ) 🌱I have had the help of a naturopath to reduce the side effects from coming off of the pill & I am addressing all areas of my health (gut, hormonal, emotional etc) I’m also seeing a doctor & for the past 6 weeks I have been getting acupuncture. Yesterday I finally had another period & the relief I am feeling is immense. For the past few months it has felt as though I am constantly ‘PMS’ing & I was not having the relief / release of a period. FINALLY I have had some information from my body in regards to my hormone health & it gives me hope that I may be on the right track to balancing my body / hormones again. It’s a wild, informative, up & down process but I am loving every bit of it. “Bands will make her dance” 🎶 kidding but I do love some bands for the booty!⠀ ⠀ And as some of my clients say, "their side butt". 😂 in particular.⠀ ⠀ That side butt has muscles that we’re talking about today with abduction and more specifically the glute medius . ⠀ ⠀ So what is abduction? ⠀ Abduction is the movement (in this case) of moving the leg away from the body (think lateral leg raises). ⠀ ⠀ Which muscles are responsible for this? The hip abductors- mainly the glute max and medius. There are 4 other smaller muscles that work to do this too.⠀ ⠀ We want these muscles to be strong for a few reasons:⠀ - They help stabilize our hip joint⠀ - They help us get swing our leg to get out of the bed or car⠀ - They help us move side to side⠀ - They help stabilize the knee and feet by keeping hips in line and working with other muscles for the balance of it all.⠀ ⠀ Having these muscles strong help prevent knee and hip pain from movement, overcompensation, running, poor gait, etc. Doing exercises to strengthen them can only help anyone who has pain. They also help tone our booty too :).⠀ ⠀ Where to start with hip abduction movements- ⠀ Side lying leg raises are the best place for anyone to start - you want to stay in a straight line and put top foot in a flexed position and point toe slightly down. Raise leg up and slowly down controlling the movement. You should feel this in the side and back of your leg.⠀ ⠀ Once you master that move into a side plank and do the same movement. You can add bands once you feel comfortable above the knee.⠀ ⠀ Another great option is lateral band walks (shown) keeping tension the entire time and keeping feet forward.⠀ ⠀ Try adding one of these into your workout routine (great for a warm up!) and let me know how you feel! Such a lovey morning training this gorgeous little one’s mama. It was a beautiful warm autumn day and loved how she fell asleep on the garden along with the cat! I love working with new mums - helping them gently re build their strength after pregnancy and birth. I taught this mother pregnancy Pilates throughout her difficult pregnancy and it’s great to see her the “other side” now. Most new mums are shocked by how weak and achy they feel post birth and in those early months. I remember feeling exactly the same, like I has aged a 100 years! It all started with a normal menstrual cycle which turned into 6 weeks of continuous bleeding. I then took a visit to the GP who referred me to have a trans-vaginal ultrasound (ouch), blood tests, and a visit to a not so nice Gynecologist. I also had to take Tranexamic acid and Primolut to stop the bleeding. I ended up having two trans-vaginal ultrasounds, which were very uncomfortable and slightly painful as I did have cysts at the time which I was unaware of. At my gynecologist appointment, I was given a 4 page leaflet about PCOS, explained that my ovaries had cysts on them and follicles, and told if I had troubles getting pregnant, after 12 months, that I could go on medication. Also that once I had kids that I should get a hysterectomy. This was all explained very abruptly in a 5 minute appointment, and left me in a mix of emotions, feeling very emotional and overwhelmed. Six weeks of bleeding ended up causing me to need an emergency iron transfusion as my iron was very low. With no follow up appointments I was left to my own devices and decided to research as much as I could and joined some support groups on Facebook and watched YouTube videos of other women with PCOS to gather information and advice, in which has inspired me to share my journey with you all and create a blog for PCOS. Now 3 years later I am more aware of my symptoms and what I need to do to control them. I have struggled with fertility and had two miscarriages.. Lately I am focusing on my diet in hopes to lose some weight and feel better about myself. Everyday is a battle mentally with self confidence and physically with fatigue, aches and excess hair to name a few. PCOS is a lifetime. With the help of the cyster community, we can make it a great lifetime. 💜 . . The seated Hip Abduction/Adduction Machine - Let’s be honest, I’m not a big fan. These aren’t functional. There’s a million other things I’d rather do, but, I’ve turned the corner and can appreciate a good use for it having gone through this recent surgery. ————— If you’re healthy and able, nothing should replace compound movements like squats and deadlifts. Period. However, after being on crutches for nearly 11 weeks, my ability to feel my glutes engage has been altered, and this is usually easy for me. These machines have been awesome to use to activate my abd and adductors prior to doing other rehab leg exercises. Basically I “prime” them. The position your hips and body are in during with these is not ideal, but you can maximize that by not being lazy. Don’t lean against the back rest, keep your core tight, keep upright posture to minimize other muscles helping, don’t use your hands, control the weight and go through the full allowable range of motion. ————— I’ll likely only use these machines a couple more weeks, maybe, however, they serve a purpose as much as I don’t like them. Be prepared to be stared at. 🧠 STROKE 🧠 This week we are chatting about some of the differences between men and women’s health risks. Did you know that simply being a woman puts you at higher risk for stroke? About 55,000 more women than men will have strokes this year. That is a freaking LOT OF WOMEN. Why?!? Estrogen. Some of you may know that birth control pills, hormone replacement therapy and pregnancy can raise the risk - and the reason is the shift in estrogen. It’s not the estrogen itself, it’s the actual changes in levels that can cause a clot leading to risk of stroke. Other risk factors for women include migraines (we know women have way more than men, again because of the damn hormones), atrial fibrillation (also more common in women), pregnancy and hormone replacement therapy. So to sum it up: hormones. GREAT. While some factors we can’t control, there are a ton we can. 1️⃣ Don’t smoke (although it’s 2019 so I don’t even know who smokes anymore ... you should already be embarrassed) 2️⃣ Exercise, even just a LITTLE is helpful 3️⃣ Eat better! Yesterday I had a load of macros left over and a bad hankering for something sweet 🍪 So I created this cakey cookie 🤤 with whatever ingredients I could find in my kitchen cabinet. This recipe serves 3-4 people or 2 very greedy members of the Harford family 🙈 #pizookie #glutenfree #dairyfree #highprotein #vegetarian Dry ingredients 1 cup Chickpea flour/Besan 1/4 Maple Sugar (or any sugar ) 3/4 tsp Baking powder or 1/4 baking soda 1/4 tsp pink salt 1/4 cup + 1tbsp chocolate chips (I just chopped up a 90% Godiva bar and 70% Lindt bar ) Wet Ingredients 1/4 cup melted coconut oil 1 egg 1/2 tsp vanilla 2 scoops @yorica vanilla ice cream to serve Preheat oven to 180deg. Mix together all dry ingredients except chocolate chips in a bowl. In a separate bowl mix the wet ingredients. Add the wet ingredients to dry. Mix well till combined. Fold in the chocolate chips, it kind of resembles cookie dough here. Spread batter into a well oiled cast iron skillet (mine is a 6.5”) but these could also make 2, 3.5” skillet cookies. Bake for 20mins till golden brown and cooked all the way through. Top with ice cream! If you want to take a pic for the gram make sure you are quick before that ice cream melts......Enjoy!!!!

Hello Bluefam, shall we continue our discussion on Vaginal Health?⠀ ok, here we go!!⠀ ⠀ The third type of Vaginitis we would be talking about is *Trichomoniasis*⠀ ⠀ Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted Infection (STD) which is caused by a parasite usually found in the vagina and urethra. ⠀ ⠀ Symptoms: About 70% of people who are infected do not show any symptoms. When people do have symptoms, they can range in severity from mild to severe. Symptoms develop anywhere from 5 to 28 days after being infected, but some people can develop symptoms even later. The symptoms may improve or even go away and then return in some people. If untreated, the infection can persist for months to years. - Smelly, itchy, and typically frothy or foamy vaginal discharge. - Vaginal itching. - Yellow or gray-green discharge. - Pain with urination very likely The diagnosis of trichomoniasis will prompt the check for other STD’s. Treatment is Oral Antibiotics. Goodnews is that Trichomoniasis is the most easily treatable STD. Prevention: - Abstinence is the best form of prevention - Wear condoms (reduces, but does not completely eliminate the possibility of contracting trichomonas infection.) - Wash before and after intercourse (this is very important for Vaginal health generally) - Don't share swimsuits or towels. (Trichomonads survive for up to 45 minutes outside the body.) - Shower immediately after swimming in a public pool. In conclusion; Trichomonas infection is very contagious may cause inflammation and irritation of the genital areas that makes it easier to transmit and acquire HIV infection. About 20% of people who are treated develop a recurrent infection. For this reason, the sexual partner has to be treated also. , if you are pregnant and experiencing any of these symptoms...
