In the spring of 2014, we became heavily inspired to research and develop autonomous-living technologies - a form of ecotech that contributes to an abundant quality of life by interfacing with the natural environment and contributing to biodiversity. At the time we felt:
✧ the climate crisis was notably reshaping our environment in a way that demanded adaptation
✧ it was necessary to learn how to be more responsible for what we were consuming daily and what the repercussions were for our actions.
Later that year, and after a lot of investigating, we realized that the collective systems developed in part by Earthships (in Taos, NM) could help create the caliber of interconnectedness of life we were looking for.
It took some hard work, generosity, and a lot of moving around, but eventually we made it out to Taos in the summer of 2016. After visiting earlier that year, we decided to invest fully in our research. Blown away by the concept of a “bill-free” life, we enrolled in the Earthship Academy in September and found ourselves enamored with the feel of ‘autonomous’ living.
✧ our water filtered from the sky, which drained into a black water irrigation cell and graciously repurposed it to water the outdoor landscaping.
✧ our electricity from the sun and a mono/poly crystalline solar array, which got a charge on a full moon and other low-light times of a given day.
At night we could turn our power system completely off (with respect to the lights running on DC). No humming, no whirring or extra cost. Our heating and cooling was taken care of by the design of the house, primarily comprised of used Earth-filled tires. You can’t imagine how many of those there are in the world! Combining thermal mass and passive solar, the 950 sq. ft. house stayed cool in the 100℉ summer heat and toasty in the -15℉ winter...
