Beating Retreat Ceremony
Wagah-Atri "Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel"
People often use this quote of Dr Samuel Johnson, 18th century American aphorist, if they don't like the government of the day or if the people who wield power use patriotism for self interest. "Patriotism is of its nature defensive, both militarily and culturally. Nationalism, on the other hand, is inseparable from the desire for power" - George Orwell
Today amongst the intelligentsia this feel good differentiation is most sought after, for people who use the term 'nationalism' are down right hated by the same.
Drawing differentiations between the terms or attaching danger to one, especially nationalism, based on foolishly plagiarising the European paranoia ( born of a different context) with the term are just to fill newspaper columns with no real world meaning.
The crux is that though patriotism/ nationalism can't make people truthful or honest but it can inspire them to do many things of value.
Most vital aspect of patriotism/ nationalism is that it is a time tested precursor to national shame. For the bad roads, rude behaviour, indiscipline ( especially those who break the queues), bigotry, filth, corruption and other deficiencies.
Jai Hind !
Bharat Mata Ki , Jai !
( In that order) [ If I post a pic of a plastic stewn or wrapper littered pavillion and add 'Bharat Mata Ki , Jai !' slogan along. It does not mean I hate my country or gave up on it. I just want to provoke, in a positive sense, so that individuals can act ]
