“Keep close to Nature’s heart... and break clear away, once in awhile, and climb a mountain or spend a week in the woods. Wash your spirit clean.” John Muir. Happy birthday, John. I first read John Muir’s The Mountains of California while working in a library in college. That following year, I took a backpack and traversed from finals to the beginning of the Fall semester the backcountry of the West coast, primarily in Washington and British Columbia. John’s heartfelt words and ideas helped catalyzed transformations and realizations within me where I came to find direction in my life. His spirit continues within those of us who go to the forest to listen, and learn about ourselves and our natural world.
