Some people fail because they couldn’t put themselves in the shoes of those they intended to help, teach or sell to. A portion of this failure is thanks to something known as the curse of knowledge. Simply put, it’s believed that once you learn something, it becomes extremely difficult to remember the state you were in prior to gaining said knowledge.
It’s like learning to ride a bicycle or teaching yourself how to swim. In the beginning, you struggle with the fear of a new experience. You’re terrified of falling over or drowning. Eventually, you surmount your fears, your body starts adapting to the activity and next thing you know, riding and swimming become second nature. A lot of people gradually forget how difficult it was to master said activities, so when they’re tasked to train some else to ride or swim, they’re at their wit's end. To properly train someone new, you need to be understanding of their fears and their initial inability. However, since riding and swimming is now second nature to you, it’s almost impossible for you to return to that state of ‘unknowing’. You can’t relate, therefore you can’t replicate the success you had learning the activity yourself with someone else.
This goes to show that your expertise is pointless if you cannot translate that into something those less knowledgeable than you will value. You may think a certain product is absolutely worthless to you since you have other options available that provide similar utility, but what about your potential consumers that don’t have the luxury of choice thanks to a significantly smaller income?
So munch on this food for thought: is your vast knowledge working FOR you, or AGAINST you?
