Years ago, just before winter, our father had abandoned our family. So my two siblings, my mum and I were sleeping outside of the house we used to own. We became homeless in London.
“We have lost everything, but we have each other”, my mum said. Surely, every night was difficult. I cried a lot. I longed for the past. But as the days passed, I felt thankful that I was with my family because somehow we still found a way to laugh with each other.
“It’s becoming colder”, my mum said a month later. It was a month until Christmas and we had nowhere to call home yet. We were afraid winter was coming. “Please keep warm during the cold nights”, a lady gave us her duvets. We were very thankful for her kindness. As we had a talk with her, we came to know she was a prostitute. While this job might be negatively judged by society, I saw her as just a kind woman standing in front of us with a warm heart.
“Oh Christmas is coming soon”, my mum said. The next day, my sister and I found a one room studio. It was miracle. I can still remember that day. We went for a viewing and my sister and I felt so nervous because we didn't have any proof of address or affordability. But miraculously, we got a place where we could sleep on a normal bed and have a proper shower.
“God is watching over us and keeping us calm throughout the whole process”, my mum said. All 4 of us were in one room and celebrating a loving family Christmas. We were thankful for family, the people who helped us and God. We became even more ambitious. We knew that because we had survived homelessness, we could challenge anything and do our best together to overcome anything.
During this winter, London is becoming colder. “Are you coming home now? Let’s have Christmas celebration”, when I was heading home from my office, my mum said to me on the phone. “Sorry, I didn’t have time to the buy candles”, I said. But my mum said “No problem, we have God, fate and each other. That is enough.”
