After a @joeroganclip podcast with strongman @robertoberst discussing the danger of deadlifts I wanted to offer my perspective. Are deadlifts dangerous? Well yes and no.
In the context of strong man competition ? yes. When your doing any max effort lift there is a chance for danger. Add in the fact that the weight is ridiculous, they could be tired from other events, and an extremely competitive atmosphere. It is a recipe for possible injury. So in the instance, I would say it is defenitley dangerous
In the context of properly hip hinging, well using much more modest? I would not say it is dangerous. Etablishing proper movement, mobility, muscle engagement, etc you should be fine. In fact the benefits to, weight loss, muscle building, strength and mobility you can gain can not be underestimated. I've had people with horrible knees and surgically repaired backs deadlift with no complications.
At the end of the day, like anything it depends on the context. If you feel your form on deadlifts, or any other movement for that matter is lacking. PLEASE reach out to me today for a complimentary movement screen !
