Marapachi Bommais, which literally translates to ‘wooden dolls’ .Marapachi Dolls are an important part of South Indian culture and rituals. Traditionally made of red sandalwood, silk-cotton-wood or red wood and they are displayed during the Golu. These dolls are made in pairs, generally of male and female in naked forms are dressed up by children as part of playthings and displayed during the Golu and are also symbolic gifts during marriages.Marapachi bommais are special dolls from Tirupathi, the land of Lord Venkateshwara. Some explain the word Marapachi as a special kind of wood that has medicinal values. When a child licks this plaything made of red sandalwood, the child’s saliva derives an extract of the wood which the child absorbs into its system. These marapachi dolls are passed on from one generation to another as heirloom.
We can find these dolls at every golu, even when people cannot keep an extended version they keep Marapachi bommai in the poojai room during Navaratri along with other ummachi as it is one of the important bommai for Golu.
